George
Earle would have been fascinated with the process. Just in front of
the spot where his mill was located, the specialized
boat was hard at work last summer. With a dredging hose mounted on the front,
and large poles in back that raise and lower creating anchor points, the boat
swung back and forth sucking the silt from the bottom of the lake. The silt
was pumped out the back through a long pipe that wound its way under Main
Street to a field about a mile away on East Sixth Street. The dusting off
and polishing of this jewel of Hobart is something we all can be proud of.
*** Update 2019: Was the dredging a success? Hobart is currently looking at an alternative to the sediment problem in Lake George. You can read about it here.
